Window covered – 20,000 euro fine for climate activists in Italy

Date:

In Florence, a climate activist has now been sentenced to a fine of 20,000 euros. He and a friend had pasted photos on the painting ‘Birth of Venus’ by Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510).

The two members of the group Ultima Generazione (Last Generation in German) on Tuesday pasted several photos of floods on the window that protects the painting. They also held up a poster in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery demanding a special fund of 20 billion euros to eliminate climate damage. According to initial findings, the photo was not damaged during the incident.

Here you can see the statement from Ultima Generatione.

The police have taken the two climate activists into custody. Giordano and Giacomo wanted to “remind all of us, and especially President Meloni, that tens of thousands of people have lost their homes due to climate disasters,” the group said on its Instagram channel. She has already launched a petition against this oppression.

In recent years, activists in Italy have repeatedly attacked landmarks such as St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice or the Trevi Fountain in Rome. So far no permanent damage has occurred.

A fine of up to 60,000 euros is possible
Last month, parliament in Rome passed a law stating that climate activists can be fined up to 60,000 euros if they damage landmarks.
