For the Russian government, Western governments’ outrage over the sudden death of Putin critic Alexei Navalny is disgusting. “We find it absolutely unacceptable to make such, well, downright disgusting statements,” government spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.
In any case, the criticism will not affect Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Of course, these statements cannot harm our head of state,” Peskov said. He had no statement from Putin to add to this. The investigations would be conducted in accordance with legal requirements.
Criticism of Putin came from Western governments, but also from editors. “Putin ‘surpassed’ even (Soviet dictator Josef) Stalin in his cruelty. In any case, he had his opponents convicted of treason (…). “But Putin created his own legal system – he throws the dissatisfied out of the windows of apartment buildings, poisons them, tortures them with public humiliation (…),” said, for example, the Bulgarian tabloid “24 Chassa”.
Germany summons ambassadors
The German Foreign Ministry in Berlin summoned the Russian ambassador on Monday. The politically motivated proceedings against Navalny and many other critics of the Russian government show how brutally the judiciary acts against dissenters, a spokeswoman said. Putin suppresses freedom of expression in Russia. “We condemn this in the strongest possible terms and expressly call for the release of all those imprisoned in Russia for political reasons.”
The circumstances of Navalny’s death in a Siberian prison camp must be fully clarified and the body must also be released to the family. In addition, commemoration with impunity must be the minimum. So far, depending on the source, 200 to 400 fines have been imposed on people participating in commemorations (see video above).
