After heavy criticism from his Republican competitor Nikki Haley, Donald Trump has now also commented on the death of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny. However, expressions of condolence were not part of the statement.
On the contrary, the former US president made an absurd comparison on the Truth Social platform he co-founded. “The sudden death of Alexei Navalny has made me increasingly aware of what is happening in our country,” he wrote on Monday. “It is slow, steady progress, with lying, radical left politicians, prosecutors and judges leading us down a path of destruction.”
Trump had already shared an opinion article this weekend comparing Trump’s treatment in the US to Putin’s treatment of Navalny. Trump wrote the article headline on his post: “Biden:Trump:Putin:Navalny.”
Haley demanded comment: “Or he’s for Trump…”
Trump was initially noticeably quiet after Navalny’s death. His competitor Nikki Haley, who, like the 77-year-old, is running for the Republican presidential nomination, heavily criticized him for this. Trump must answer whether he believes Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death, the 52-year-old demanded on American television on Sunday evening (local time). She previously said: “Either he’s on Putin’s side and thinks it’s cool that Putin killed one of his political opponents, or he doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal. Both are worrisome. Both are a problem.”
Navalny’s body remains under lock and key
According to his team, Russian authorities want to keep the body of the Kremlin critic who died in custody secret for at least 14 days. “The investigators have told the lawyers and Alexei’s mother that they will not hand over the body,” Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Yarmysch wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. The reason given was “chemical tests” to be performed on the dead person.
On Monday morning, Alexei’s mother Lyudmila Navalnaya and the lawyers were not allowed into the morgue in the northern Russian city of Salekhard. “The employees do not answer the question of whether Alexei’s body is there,” Yarmysch says on X.
