A duck on Lake Pichlingersee (Upper Austria) owes its life to a courageous animal lover. In the darkness the man saw the animal completely wrapped in fishing line. Desperate, he packed the bird in his car and drove to the Linz animal shelter. Unfortunately, he was there in front of closed doors around 10 p.m. because the night service was stopped at the end of 2023.
The duck was then helped to the Upper Austrian Animal Protection Association, chairman Willy Schnebel recalls: “The neck, the feathers and even the tongue were completely wrapped in silk, the right foot was so tight that it was on the verge of death.” bird was created with painstakingly detailed work, the animal lover even returned the duckling to Lake Pichlinger.
Fishing lines as a problem

Lack of staff led to closure
“We would like to thank the Linz animal shelter for abandoning an animal lover,” reads the Upper Austrian Animal Rescue Facebook page. An accusation they do not want to accept. “Our core task is the shelter, care and placement of surrendered and found animals. As far as our capabilities allow, we also care for wild animals, 1923 in the previous year,” the Upper Austrian State Animal Protection Association said in a statement, emphasizing that they are a private association that runs the Linz and Steyr animal shelters.
The night shift has been stopped “due to an acute shortage of staff”, but a wildlife sanctuary or a municipal animal shelter would provide relief. This is where the political leaders are in charge.
