Twelve people are under medical supervision in Thailand after coming into contact with a monkeypox patient. The confirmed case was a passenger in transit from Europe to Australia who had stayed at Bangkok airport for two hours.
The man had no symptoms at the time and only developed them later in Australia, where the infection was then confirmed, said Chakkrarat Pitthaya, director of the agency’s epidemiology department for disease control.
Contacts so far without symptoms
All twelve contacts have been asymptomatic so far. These were passengers and flight attendants. They must be medically observed for a total of 21 days. However, according to Pitthaya, the chance that they would have become infected is small.
More and more countries are reporting infections
In the meantime, infections with the virus are being reported from more and more countries. The World Health Organization called for a follow-up of all contacts of those affected. According to the UK health authority UK Health Security Agency, the virus usually causes only mild symptoms, but can also be serious. Only symptomatic patients with close contact are contagious.
