The EU had demanded that the Kremlin dismiss the investigation into Navalny’s death

Date:

The Kremlin has rejected an international investigation into the death of jailed opposition figure Alexei Navalny. “We do not accept such demands at all,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday, referring to the EU. The government views this as interference in its internal affairs.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell had previously called for such an investigation into the body, which is being kept under lock and key in Russia. Representatives of the EU countries commented on Navalny’s death in a joint statement (see video above).

On Tuesday, Peskov also rejected Yulia Navalnaya’s accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin murdered her husband. This is “baseless and outrageous.” The 47-year-old accused Putin in a video message on Monday of Navalny’s death in the prison camp north of the Arctic Circle. At the same time, she announced that she would continue her husband’s fight against the Russian system.

Peskov: I didn’t watch the video message
Neither he nor Putin saw this video message, Peskov said. As Navalnaya is currently a widow, he refrains from further comment. At the same time, the Kremlin spokesman defended the brutal actions of security forces against Russians who laid flowers and lit candles in many cities of the country in memory of Putin’s dead opponent. The police did their work in accordance with the law, Peskov said.

As reported, hundreds of people have been arrested in recent days for publicly remembering Navalny. Courts have imposed fines or even prison sentences in accelerated procedures. Navalny’s team criticized the fact that people had already been arrested for merely laying flowers. Many Russians continue to show their grief publicly.
