A three-storey wooden house was destroyed by flames in St. Ilgen (Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district) on Monday evening. On Tuesday, the National Criminal Investigation Department was at the scene of the fire with sniffer dogs to search for the residents in the rubble and ash. But the work is extremely difficult.
Passers-by raised the alarm around 2 a.m. on Monday after becoming aware of the fire in the remote residential building. Nine surrounding fire brigades immediately took action to combat the fire.
Fighting the fire was not easy, as only a forest road leads to the house. Several tank fire trucks were used to transport water during commuting.
“The cooperation between our fire brigades always works perfectly,” emphasized the mayor of Thörl, Günther Wagner. Unfortunately, the three-story wooden house burned to the ground – the flames were too strong. The whereabouts of the two residents initially remained unclear. But they are suspected of being in the burned ruins.
Burn spot very hot
Detectives from the National Criminal Investigation Department were on site on Monday to get a first impression. However, this had to be stopped due to the darkness and the extremely hot fire area.
Eviction as a possible motive for the fire
The fire experts continued their work on Tuesday. But it will take time, because mountains of burned wood make the work difficult. The police also deployed fire detection and body sniffing dogs. The mayor did not want to respond to the rumors about an impending eviction of the residents, only this: “There is a civil procedure underway.” The house is said to be owned by a large local entrepreneur.
Only investigation will reveal whether the desperate couple wanted to use the fire to avoid being forced to move. Technical reasons are of course also possible. However, the investigations will likely continue for even longer.
