The second half of the week is tough in terms of weather! Freezing rain, double-digit temperatures and snowfall at lower altitudes – a wild mix that will never bore you. The weather for the 2nd Advent is anything but contemplative. So wrap yourself warm.-
On Thursday, the high “Dustin” will ensure calm winter weather: in many parts of the country it will remain dry and sunny at times. The sun lasts the longest, especially in the central mountains and in the south. However, there will be denser cloud cover in the north initially, and isolated snowflakes may still fall in the Northern Alps before clearing during the day. Clouds will gather again in the west in the afternoon, but it will remain largely dry until the evening.
Be especially careful with black ice!
The weather changes significantly on Friday night: the rain spreads from the west and falls as freezing rain, especially from Flachgau and the Innviertel to the Waldviertel and Weinviertel. This significantly increases the chance of slippery surfaces. It may also be slippery in the Vienna area on Friday morning – caution is advised!
Low pressure dominates in Austria on Friday and Saturday. On Friday it started to rain in the far west in the morning hours, spreading quickly along the north side of the Alps and to the east during the morning. The snow line rises above 1,300 meters during the day. However, it remains mainly dry in the south.
A maximum of 11 degrees is expected on Saturday
The changeable weather will continue on Saturday: it will rain occasionally, especially on the north side of the Alps and in the east. Towards the afternoon, precipitation increases along the north side of the Alps and with a falling snow line, it may snow again in the evening from about 900 meters. Despite the cloudy weather, temperatures remain mild for this time of year: 1 to 11 degrees are expected.
Arctic cold air will flow into Austria on Sunday, accompanied by an Italian low. Rain and snow spread, with the snow line dropping from 600 to about 300 meters. Sleet or sleet is sometimes possible at lower elevations. In the south, precipitation decreases during the day, only in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia the clouds loosen here and there. The temperatures are between -2 and +5 degrees. How much snow will actually fall in the east remains uncertain.
Persistent frost at the beginning of the week
At the start of the week, a moist, cold east-northeast flow will bring highs just above 0 degrees in the lowlands, while widespread permanent frost will prevail in the mountains.
