After Corona and monkey pox, now canine malaria – will it never end? Dog lovers should take care of their pets.
In Germany there is great uncertainty among dog owners. Since the start of the tick season, several four-legged friends have died after being bitten by the leeches. According to initial studies, experts are now blaming “dog malaria” for it.
This disease is transmitted through the introduced floodplains. This is also increasing in Austria – and with it the infection, from which dogs unfortunately often die.
Taken from Hungary
“The species was introduced to us in the 1980s after hunting trips in Hungary and, favored by climate change, is not only found in eastern Austria, but also in Tyrol,” says Dr. Michael Leschnik, senior physician at the Outpatient Center for Small Animals at the VetMed University of Vienna. Experts assume that every 50th tick carries the dangerous pathogen.
Alluvial forest ticks are larger and striped
“In principle, the disease can be treated well. If a dog behaves abnormally after a tick bite, contact the vet immediately. The ticks themselves are also easy to distinguish from the native monochromatic species,” says Leschnik, who also points out that the disease is fatal for every tenth dog. “The conventional tick vaccination does not help. The best protection is provided by means that counter tick infestation yourself. These are available as collars, tablets or drops.”
