In an interview with krone.tv, Caritas Vienna director Klaus Schwertner reports on aid measures he has experienced directly on the ground in Ukraine.
“The situation is still dramatic. I was there for a week, experienced two air raid sirens and also went to the air raid shelter. Unfortunately, I can now imagine very clearly what this permanently threatening situation, the sounding of the alarm and the bombs hitting people, does to people.”
Help is still needed. And all the aid to Ukraine will continue for a long time: “This is not a sprint, but a marathon. The longest relief operation since the Second World War.”
Caritas organizes a number of projects in Ukraine, such as the distribution of firewood. And does everything it can to ensure that at least one room can be heated in each apartment. But the situation remains very tense: “The app on the mobile phone indicates that there is an air raid siren. And there is acute danger. This is enormous psychological terror for the population.” Schwertner reports on a heartbreaking encounter with a boy in a heating room in Bakhmut. The boy could no longer draw because he already had major motor problems due to the course of the war.
In addition to the help from Caritas Ukraine, the interview also discussed the situation of homeless people in Vienna. Internationally, the federal capital is doing well in this area, but the fate is very difficult for everyone involved. Despite the mild temperatures, there is a lot of frequency again on Caritas’ cold telephone; this year there have already been 8,500 calls.
