When it comes to security, according to leading European politicians, everything depends on military support for Ukraine. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis now tried to make a historical comparison: he warned of a “Pearl Harbor moment” for NATO from Russia. There is only one way to stop the aggressor in time.
“If Russia is not stopped by Ukraine, the war could spread,” Landsbergis warned in an interview with ZDF. He expressed certainty that Russian leader Vladimir Putin would not shy away from an attack on a NATO country if Ukraine lost the conflict – and even warned of a surprise attack on the military alliance.
“We can’t wait”
“We have a very aggressive neighbor intent on testing NATO. We have to prepare for that,” said the chief diplomat of the Baltic EU and NATO country. “We can’t wait a second, our Pearl Harbor moment. We cannot wait until every European country is actually attacked by Russia – south, north, east and west.”
The historical comparison: Almost out of nowhere, Japanese planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii – this surprise attack spread World War II to the Pacific, as the United States decided to actively participate in the war.
Germans have “incredible devices”
What will it take to avoid such a surprise? Landsbergis is convinced of Western military aid to Ukraine, which has been invaded by Russia. With this in mind, he also called on Germany to supply more weapons, for example with Taurus long-range Martian bodies: “Yes, Germany has incredible equipment that it could supply to Ukraine.” Ukraine needs this now for strategic reasons to have the upper hand in the conflict to win.
Where would Russia stop?
When this fails, he paints a gloomy scenario on the wall. The question is whether Russia can be stopped in another way. ‘And where would it stop? And that is what all countries on the eastern flank are thinking about. If Russia is not stopped by Ukraine, the war could spread. Then he can also reach us,” says Landsbergis.
In any case, he is certain about his own country: “If Ukraine falls, it will be clear to everyone that we are next.”
