Control tightened – Israel expands a corridor road through Gaza

Date:

The Israeli army is expanding a road through the Gaza Strip to maintain security control over the area. The American newspaper ‘Wall Street Journal’ reported this on Tuesday. The Israeli army already controls major north-south roads in Gaza.

The road, which will now be expanded, divides the closed coastal strip south of Gaza city from the Israeli border to the Mediterranean coast along an east-west corridor. This has been occupied since the start of the war, about four months ago. According to the report, the Israeli army’s plan is to be able to quickly move through the coastal area along a safe route even after most troops have been withdrawn.

Preparing for the next phase?
The army is currently preparing for the next phase of the war, in which it plans to withdraw from populated areas and focus on targeted attacks on the Palestinian terror organization Hamas, which dominates the Gaza Strip. The east-west route is to be used and patrolled until Israel’s military operations are completed. That could take months or even years, they said.

Although the Israeli government has claimed that it does not want to permanently occupy the Gaza Strip, there must still be “full security control” over the area. The war was sparked by the October 7 massacre by Hamas and other extremist groups in Israel near the border with the Gaza Strip. More than 1,200 people were killed and another 250 were taken hostage.

The Israeli army responded with massive air strikes and a ground offensive. According to Hamas, more than 29,000 Palestinians have been killed and about 70,000 injured since then.
