Shocking moment aboard an American Airlines plane: A man tried to open an emergency exit door during the flight. The courageous intervention of some passengers helped prevent something worse from happening.
The American Airlines plane left Albuquerque for Chicago on Tuesday. The dangerous incident took place at an altitude of 7,900 meters.
“After the crew reported a passenger disturbance,” the plane returned to Albuquerque, according to the FAA. Local security forces were already waiting for the passenger.
“Feel the difference in air pressure”
Blaze Ward, one of the passengers who subdued the man, told local station ABC-7 that the passenger had already overcome the safety mechanism on the door and had both hands on the lever that would eventually open the door.
“He pulled it a little bit, and he was a big guy,” Ward said. A difference in air pressure in the cabin could already be felt and “a whistle” could be heard.
There are always incidents in the air
Erratic behavior by airline passengers is always a problem in the US. In 2021 there was a record high of almost 6,000 incidents. However, in 2022 and 2023 the number of these incidents was considerably lower, each at more than 2,000.
