The heavy snowfall in Tyrol caused some traffic problems on Friday, especially in the area around the Brenner Pass. Snow chains were required on some roads, but progress was slow on others, including the Brenner Motorway. An accident involving a snow plow also occurred in Mühlbachl im Wipptal.
Cars sometimes got stuck or slipped, especially around the Brenner Pass, for example on the main road to Wipptal. Traffic also came to a standstill on the A13 highway due to stationary trucks. According to Asfinag, about 40 centimeters of fresh snow fell near Brenner-Nord in a short time. More than twenty clearing vehicles and towing companies are being deployed to clear the route again.
All this no longer helped shortly after noon: around 12:30 p.m., according to the ÖAMTC, the Brenner highway had to be closed to all southbound traffic. Because many people switched to other roads, there were also delays around Innsbruck.
Snow chain tasks, snow plow had an accident
Late Friday morning, the ÖAMTC also reported several roads on which progress was only possible with snow chains: on the Arlbergstrasse between St. Anton and Langen, the Sellrainer Strasse between Zirl and Kühtai and in the Zillertal between Hintertux and Kaltenbach.
A traffic accident also occurred late on Friday morning in the Wipptal, in Mühlbachl, in which, according to the first information from the control center, a snow plow would have had an accident. Further details were not yet known.
Slippery roads also became a problem around Innsbruck, causing some plate damage in Vill due to cars colliding with each other.
Avalanches without injuries
In the Schlick in the Stubai Valley, two avalanches were reported to the Tyrolean control center, but fortunately no one was injured. The avalanche warning service had warned that the avalanche danger in parts of Tyrol would rise to level four on Friday.
