The fatal fire at the hospital in Uelzen, Germany (Lower Saxony) is believed to be caused by a mentally ill patient. The Lüneburg Public Prosecutor’s Office announced this on Friday. Five patients died in the fire on the night of January 4 to 5.
The victims are three men between the ages of 55 and 67 and two women aged 87 and 94. More than twenty other people were slightly to seriously injured (see video above). The patient who may have started the fire is one of five people who died in the flames. The suspect can therefore no longer be investigated. According to the Public Prosecution Service, an investigation will still take place into culpable homicide – against unknown persons.
Too little fire protection?
It is also suspected that the fire protection measures were not sufficient. On Thursday, the documents were secured at the hospital and the data was backed up, the hospital said. The hospital’s officials and employees cooperated with the Public Prosecution Service.
No further information was initially provided. As reported, the intention was that an expert report would provide information about the cause of the fire and witnesses were also interviewed. The fire broke out on the third floor of a wing of the building. Patients were transferred to surrounding hospitals and the emergency room was closed until January 12.
