Due to the persistent snowfall throughout Tyrol, numerous roads are currently closed, including the Brenner highway A 13. The Red Cross has taken over the care of the numerous drivers who were stuck in traffic jams for hours.
The Brenner motorway A13 is closed in both directions from Innsbruck towards Brenner. According to the current knowledge and estimates of ASFINAG and the police, the closure will last until approximately 10 p.m. The Austrian Red Cross has already organized care for people stuck in traffic.
Work not yet completed
The disruption was caused by several poorly equipped heavy vehicles getting stuck on the A13. Other trucks tried to overtake these vehicles and also got stuck. This meant that snow plows could no longer pass through. As a result, the heavy vehicles had to be towed individually from a route of approximately three kilometers with great effort. Work is progressing, but not yet completed.
In addition, other federal and state highways are currently affected by road closures, including:
- B 182 Brenner Straße from Innsbruck towards Brenner between the A 13 Innsbruck-Süd exit and Matrei
- B 169 Zillertal Road between Ginzling and Mayrhofen in both directions due to avalanche danger
- L 229 Schmirntalstraße (between Stafflach and Obern)
- L 231 Nösslacher Straße (between Gries am Brenner and Obernberg)
- L 228 Naiser Straße (between Beierler and Navis)
- Felbertauern Toll Road: Complete closure for all motor vehicles between the Felbertauern Tunnel and Mittersill.
The avalanche danger increased
Due to the greatly increased avalanche danger, Naiser Strasse had to be closed to all traffic on Friday. “From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the state has defined a time corridor where the street can be passed,” said Mayor Lukas Peer. The road from Moosleite (at km 2,750) will be closed again from 7:30 PM. The avalanche committee will meet at 7 a.m. on Saturday and make further decisions about the road closure.
Gorge section closed due to avalanche
Due to an avalanche, the gorge route (B169) between Mayrhofen and Ginzling has been closed to all traffic since February 23, 2024 from 4 p.m. Since the Harpfnerwand tunnel is closed, it is impossible to reach Ginzling. It is not known how long the ban will last.
