According to media reports, Wayne LaPierre, former head of the influential US gun lobby NRA, has been found guilty of embezzling funds. Accordingly, a jury in New York on Friday found LaPierre guilty of causing losses to the lobbying organization of $5.4 million (almost five million euros) through his misconduct.
The New York Attorney General’s Office filed a lawsuit against LaPierre and other NRA executives in August 2020. Attorney General Letitia James accused the defendants of using the lobbying organization as their “personal piggy bank” and spending millions on personal perks such as private jets, expensive restaurants and family trips to the Bahamas.
Resigns as NRA boss
LaPierre announced his resignation as NRA chief shortly before the trial began in January, citing health concerns as the reason. The NRA is one of the most influential lobbying organizations in the US and claims to have approximately five million members. It has been opposing the tightening of US gun laws for decades, sometimes using highly controversial methods.
The influence of the NRA is enormous: the organization can exert great pressure on politicians and is an important party donor. She supported, among other things, the presidential election campaign of Republican Donald Trump in 2016 with millions of dollars. Efforts to tighten gun laws have repeatedly failed due to resistance from the gun lobby.
