What started with a nighttime chase of a cyclist through the center of Wolfsberg ended with his life being saved.
The two police officers certainly did not expect such an operation when they drove through the center of Wolfsberg as part of their patrol duties. Around 4 a.m. they saw a cyclist riding away on his bike after seeing the police. “They briefly lost sight of the fugitive and only found his bicycle on the cycle path in the vicinity of the ‘Yellow Bridge’,” is how the police describe the strange operation.
“Clung desperately to a branch”
What happened? The two police officers were searching the area for the man when they suddenly noticed him in the Lavant. “He was desperately clinging to a branch and his whole body was in the water. “Due to the strong current and the cold water temperature, he could not extricate himself from the life-threatening situation,” the police describe the anxious moments.
Because the branch the man was clinging to was in danger of breaking and the young man was already completely exhausted and apparently could no longer hold on, the officers did not hesitate for a second: “One of the two climbed into the water near the bank and was hit through his body. Top clothing secured by his patrol partner.” The police officer was just able to reach and restrain the man, who was floating about three meters away in the river.
“The officer was already completely soaked – due to the strong current he could only pull the man to the bank with utmost effort,” the police continued. Until the ambulance arrived, the completely hypothermic 23-year-old from Wolfsberg was warmed by his rescuers with an insulating blanket. But why did the man run away when he saw the police?
The man fled in fear
“As he fled, he simply stated that he was afraid of the police at that moment,” the statement said. The man was not drunk and was not using drugs. “It was only through the courageous and quick action of the officers that the 23-year-old was prevented from being swept away by the current of the Lavant,” the department praised its officers.
