Former US President Donald Trump has canceled his press conference for Monday in Georgia. His lawyers would rather use the alleged evidence of electoral fraud in the US state in the 2020 presidential election in court, Trump wrote Thursday evening (local time) on the Truth Social platform he co-founded. “That’s why the press conference is no longer necessary!”
It remained unclear whether the Republican was planning another event instead. According to American broadcaster ABC, Trump’s lawyers advised him to cancel the press conference so as not to weaken his legal position.
Charged with attempted voter fraud
In Georgia, Trump was recently charged with attempted voter fraud. A jury ruled that he should stand trial for attempting to influence the outcome of the presidential election there nearly three years ago. 18 other people have been accused of him. In response, Trump announced the press conference and said he wanted to expose alleged election fraud in Georgia.
Trump has yet to admit defeat in the 2020 presidential election and is spreading the lie that voter fraud robbed him of his victory over Democrat Joe Biden. For lack of evidence, dozens of his camp’s lawsuits were dismissed by electoral courts across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
Press conference would be a tactical error
According to broadcaster ABC, Trump’s lawyers warned the 77-year-old that the press conference he planned would only add to his legal troubles. And Trump has a lot of it right now: The former real estate mogul is the first ex-president in US history to face trial for alleged crimes. There are a total of four charges against him.
The numerous accusations against the former president
Prosecutors in New York have charged Trump with falsifying business records, while in Miami it is with keeping government records secret. In the American capital Washington, the Republican has been charged at the federal level for his attempts to reverse the result of the presidential election.
Trump is trying to postpone the start of the trials as much as possible – also in view of the election campaign. He wants to return to the White House for the Republicans after the 2024 presidential election.
Special counsel urges speedy trial
On Thursday, his Washington litigation lawyers asked for the trial to begin in April 2026. Special counsel Jack Smith, on the other hand, had proposed that the trial begin on January 2, 2024. The responsible judge will probably decide at a hearing at the end of August. “The public has an interest in justice and a fair trial, not a hasty judgment,” Trump’s lawyers’ motion said.
His lawyers complain that the government material to be viewed is 11.5 million pages and that the download of the documents was still incomplete after two days. The government was then asked to send hard disks and the material is now being entered into the system. As an illustration, an image was included with the application to show that a stack of 11.5 million pages would be larger than the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument.
