Dozens of people have been killed in an attack on a mosque in Burkina Faso, West Africa, according to security sources.
Armed attackers opened fire on worshipers in the town of Natiaboani in the east of the country early on Sunday morning, AFP news agency learned on Monday from a source within the security forces. Accordingly, “several dozen” people were killed.
“The victims were all Muslims, mainly men, who had gathered in the mosque to pray,” said a local resident. Another witness at the scene reported that the attackers surrounded the mosque and then shot at the worshipers. An “important religious leader” was also among the dead.
Regular jihadist attacks
Natiaboani is a rural community about 60 kilometers south of the capital of the Estonian region, Fada N’Gourma, which has faced repeated attacks from armed groups for years. Burkina Faso has been regularly rocked by jihadist violence since 2015, attributed to groups linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State.
Also on Sunday, at least fifteen people were killed in a suspected jihadist attack during a mass in a Catholic church in the north of the country.
