The “Heilbronner Dachstein accident” is considered one of the largest rescue operations in the history of the Alps. On April 15, 1954, 400 mountain rescuers, alpine gendarmes and volunteers searched for ten missing students and three teachers from Heilbronn. The Obertraun mountain rescue service was also in action. Walter Höll, the search team’s only living witness, remembers it.
“Krone”: It will be almost 71 years since the devastating mountain accident. Have you ever let go of what you have experienced?
Walter Höll: The memories remain. Also because in the seventy years since there has never been such a strong storm. When the group started the tour on Maundy Thursday, there were already weather warnings. But no one could have imagined that the wind would be so strong. In the valley there were even peaks of well over 100 kilometers per hour. And the storm lasted for almost a week, which is very unusual.
