The German federal government has reached an agreement with the European Commission in the dispute about the end of new combustion engine cars. The German Minister of Transport Volker Wissing and Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans announced this on Twitter on Saturday. According to this law, new registrations of fuel cars will also be allowed after 2035.
“We have reached an agreement with Germany on the future use of e-fuels in cars,” Timmermans tweeted. “We will now work to ensure that the regulation on CO₂ standards for cars is adopted as soon as possible.” The European Commission will immediately take the necessary legal action to implement it, he wrote.
“The way is clear: Europe remains technology neutral,” German Transport Minister Volker Wissing tweeted. Vehicles with internal combustion engines could also be re-registered after 2035 if they only fill up with CO₂ neutral fuels.
In fact, from 2035 only e-cars should be newly registered in the EU. Before the final vote, however, the auto industry countries Germany and Italy vetoed it. Berlin insisted that thereafter new cars with internal combustion engines using so-called e-fuels – ie climate-neutral artificial fuels produced with green electricity – be allowed.
