The increasing suffering of farmer Andreas Draxler is caused by the strictly protected rodents. A family of beavers has been living next to his fields for about five years, undermining the soil and stripping away trees. Why this could increasingly become a problem in Lower Austria and what the nature conservation authority is countering.
First of all, the good news for animal rights activists: the beaver population in Lower Austria is still increasing – in 2023 there were already almost 9,000 animals (European beaver or Castor beaver) in the state. This is evident from the inventory report of the state nature conservation service. As the population recovers, the problems and dangers that the logger causes in the cultivated natural landscape also increase.
