Do you think that Kitzbühel, Schladming or one of the Arlberg municipalities such as Lech or St. Anton are the ski capital of Austria? Not even close! At least when it comes to where the local top skiers who compete for points at the World Cup come from. A small community from Vorarlberg is at the forefront.
The Bregenzerwald community of Mellau, with its 1,258 souls, first became known throughout Austria in 2010, when the “Holstuonarmusigbigbandclub” stormed the charts with the song “Vo Mello bis ge Schoppornou”. Mellau may already have been known to pharmacists, as the developer of the flu drug Tamiflu, Norbert Bischofberger (the brother of ‘Krone’ journalist Conny), grew up in the community at the foot of the Kanisfluh.
