A 48-year-old Viennese man died Tuesday in an alpine accident on the Rax in Lower Austria. The man was with a 36-year-old climbing partner on the Alpine Club via ferrata when he collapsed and fell to his death.
The 48-year-old fell over a steep scree field 50 to 70 meters (160 to 230 feet), state police headquarters reported. Because the woman did not have a cell phone, she called out loudly for help to draw attention to herself. A family of three heard the screams and started the rescue chain.
More people brought safely to the valley
According to the police, the 13-year-old son vomited due to psychological stress. It was therefore not possible for the family to continue. The three people, as well as the victim’s climbing partner, were transported to the valley by the aviation police.
