Two years after the full introduction of cannabis, Thailand is returning: recreational use will be banned by the end of the year, as Thai Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has announced. However, use for medical purposes should remain permitted.
“Without a law regulating cannabis, it will be abused. Cannabis abuse has negative consequences for Thai children. In the long term, this could lead to other medications,” Cholnan said.
The corporate sector is booming
Thailand was the first country in Southeast Asia to allow medical use of cannabis in 2018 and recreational use in 2022. Since then, an industry of tens of thousands of cannabis stores has emerged there, estimated to be worth $1.2 billion by next year.
Cannabis shops operating illegally will no longer be allowed to operate and home cultivation of cannabis will also be banned, said Cholnan, who estimated the number of legally registered shops at 20,000.
The law will probably come into effect at the end of this year
“Under the new law, cannabis will be a controlled plant and cultivation will require a permit.” The bill must be submitted to Cabinet for approval next month before being sent to Parliament for approval before the end of the year.
