With a breakthrough in optical storage media research, Chinese scientists are paving the way for a successor to the DVD with a storage capacity expected to eclipse all that came before. This is made possible by a new wonder material from the laboratory.
“It took 10 years to search for this kind of material,” said Min Gu, professor of optical-electronic and computer engineering at Shanghai University of Technology. But eventually they found a suitable candidate for the “DVD of the future,” which could hold terabytes of data: Gu’s team called the new material “AIE-DDPR.” Compared to Blu-Ray discs, the storage capacity can be increased four thousand times (!). Krone+ explains the principles by which the miracle disk works.
