Eleven teachers too – norovirus in Salzburg: 71 children have already become ill

Date:

The norovirus continues to rage at a primary school in Salzburg-Parsch. Now 71 children and eleven teachers have already been infected. According to the city of Salzburg, surface disinfection will continue this weekend.

Due to a sudden gastrointestinal infection, 40 children and five teachers from a primary school in the Parsch district of Salzburg stayed at home on Thursday. New cases were added on Friday.

Eleven of the 19 teachers and 71 of the 234 children are now ill. The surface disinfection that started yesterday will continue this weekend, the city of Salzburg said.

Norovirus can stick to surfaces for days to weeks, said Rainer Pusch, head of the city’s health department. “Now that half of the school is actually gone, the cleaning staff can continue to disinfect surfaces even more intensively.”

Pusch hopes that the weekend will take the pressure off further distribution. In any case, after the symptoms have subsided – severe diarrhea and vomiting and often also abdominal and muscle pain, mild fever and headache – sick people should stay home for at least two days because they are still contagious for that long.
