It’s a sad, sensational discovery that hikers made last Saturday on the Lido de Venezia. In front of them, an eight-foot-long, one-ton sunfish lay in the sand.
The passers-by immediately called the emergency services – the fire brigade eventually documented the monstrous sight of the already dead animal on Facebook (see post below). The huge fish washed up near the former hospital building, not far from Nicelli airport, north of the Lido.
In some photos, bands have been placed around the fish’s body; The tracks in the sand show that the fish has already been pulled to land by the emergency services. The animal had to be rescued with the help of the police due to bad weather forecasts, the fire brigade says in the photos.
At one tonne it is almost a lightweight
With its impressive size, the washed-up sunfish probably weighs about a ton. Compared to its counterparts it is still lightweight – the largest sunfish ever weighed was discovered off the coast of an island in the Azores – with a live weight of a whopping 2.7 tons, the specimen was more than twice as heavy as the animal in the Azores. Lido.
According to the fire brigade, the sample will now be removed by a specialized company and eventually made available to the University of Padua for research purposes.
