SOS Children’s Villages has been supporting children and families with emergency aid projects in Ukraine since the start of the war. This also applies to the west of the country, where many internally displaced people have found shelter. In the krone.tv interview, Birgit Schatz & Christine Weilhartner talk with Jürgen Winterleitner about the current situation of Ukrainian children and families and about aid offers for refugees in Austria.
Christine Weilhartner: “The families live in a state of emergency, partly because they have left everything behind. We have spoken to many foster parents, mothers and displaced families who fled with nothing but a small backpack and now have to start all over again in western Ukraine.” Their words paint a picture of despair, but also of active help.
Birgit Schatz talks about the Ukrainian situation in Austria, where SOS Children’s Villages helps refugee children and families build a new life: “More resources are needed to learn the Austrian language and integrate children into the local school system. The challenges are great, but not insurmountable.”
The common message is clear: despite the dramatic war, SOS Children’s Villages shines as a light of hope and support.
