Pulled down, spat on and stepped on: that is what two young people in Vienna-Donaustadt allegedly did on Friday morning with an Israeli flag. The incident was noticed by a man who then alerted the police. The investigation is ongoing.
Unfortunately, this is not the first incident of this kind in Vienna. According to a witness, the two unidentified men tore down the flag that was hanging in a public square where flags of other denominations were also being hoisted. They then allegedly spat and kicked the flag.
The police are investigating
“It is being investigated on suspicion of serious damage to property and disparagement of religious teachings,” Vienna police said on Saturday. The State Bureau for State Security and Combating Extremism is also aware of the incident.
Not the first case in Vienna
This is not the first case in Vienna where a Jewish flag was damaged. Similar incidents occur again and again and the actions are usually carried out by young people. It was only in October of the previous year that an event in front of the city temple caused a stir in the media.
Teenagers shouted inflammatory slogans
At the time, a video was published online showing a girl and other people shouting inflammatory slogans and tearing the Israeli flag attached to the Israeli Community building from its anchorage.
