First country in the world – France: right to abortion in the constitution

France was the first country in the world to include “freedom to abortion” in its constitution. Members of both houses of parliament voted 780 to 72 in favor of the corresponding constitutional amendment on Monday evening. The announcement of the results was greeted with prolonged applause.

Numerous people watched the debate and voted on a large screen. After the decision, cheers erupted in the square opposite the Eiffel Tower. Last week, the French Senate voted in favor of the right to abortion.

Macron satisfied
The Eiffel Tower shone in tribute. “The pride of France. Universal message,” French President Emmanuel Macron wrote about X. The document was stamped with a state seal in Versailles using a historic stamp press. It will be solemnly sealed again on International Women’s Day on March 8.

There was also a demonstration by abortion opponents in front of the Palace of Versailles, where the vote took place.

“Historic step”
In her first response, SPÖ-EU MP Evelyn Regner spoke of a “historic step”. “As women’s and fundamental rights come under pressure around the world, today French members of the Senate and National Assembly are taking a purposeful stand against this: the freedom as a woman to decide for herself whether she wants to become pregnant or have a want to terminate pregnancy. it,” said the Vice-President of the EU Parliament, who is also a member of the Equal Opportunities Commission.
