An 80-year-old Carinthian farmer is before the Carinthian court for animal cruelty: to prove his careless treatment of horses, his neighbor even lurked in the bushes – until the situation escalated.
“I have been working with horses for 55 years, loading them on the trailer and was an expert in showing others how to do it correctly,” muttered an 80-year-old before Klagenfurt judge Christian Liebhauser-Karl. ‘And suddenly I would have to be an animal torturer! They all have no idea!”
“You don’t treat any living being like that!”
By this he refers to his neighbors who have been complaining for years about the farmer’s harsh tone: “He always insults the horses as dirty animals and also kicks and hits them,” claims one. “This is not how you treat any living being!” The other equally outraged animal rights activist even hid in the bushes next to the meadow to record video evidence.
From ‘idiot’ to ‘dirty pig’
She didn’t really succeed. You don’t see anything on the recording, but you do hear the farmer and his horse lovers throwing wild insults at each other. From “idiot” to “dirty pig”, everything is there.
And at the height of the dispute, wild threats were even said to have been made. The old farmer was initially fined 1,800 euros; the investigation into animal abuse is still ongoing. The verdict was pronounced against public prosecutor Markus Kitz and the farmer is appealing.
