The incident occurred on February 20 in the northwestern coastal city of Ensenada, Baja California. Family members said the training had already ended when the National Guard trainees were asked to enter the sea from a beach wearing combat uniforms and boots despite high waves.
Four of the men survived the ‘exercise’. So far, the bodies of six of the seven recruits who initially disappeared have been recovered.
Military officer arrested
A military officer responsible for training the young men was arrested on suspicion of disobedience and abuse of power resulting in death, Defense Minister Luis Sandoval announced on Tuesday.
The naval activity was not part of the planned training for the cadets and the military justice system is investigating the motive. It could have been an unauthorized initiation ritual.
