Domestic education as an export product for the landlocked Eastern European state of Moldova. But the focus of Education Minister Martin Polaschek’s (ÖVP) trip is not only on the shortage of skilled workers.
In Chişinău, the capital of the Republic of Moldova, Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) and his counterpart Dan Perciun broke ground for a new Austrian school abroad – the eighth in the world. A Higher Technical College (HTL) will be built there in September 2025, with an emphasis on electronics and technical computer science. The lessons will be mainly in German and based on an adapted Austrian curriculum.
“This is a forward-looking step because we are investing in the country’s youth,” Minister Polaschek said happily. The project, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ) and the Association of Industrialists (IV), is intended to strengthen both business locations, but also to contribute to the shortage of skilled workers.
There are good economic relations with Moldova. There are currently approximately 30 companies active, mainly in the banking and insurance sectors. With an investment of 96 million euros, Austria ultimately ranks among the top 10 countries.
But it can also be interpreted as a clear signal to the Russian rulers in the Kremlin. Just a few days ago, Russia once again made dangerous attempts at intimidation.
The pro-Russian separatists in the breakaway region of Transnistria asked for Russian “protection.” Moscow emphasized that the safety of residents there was its “top priority.” Moldova, surrounded by Ukraine to the east and Romania to the west, has been a candidate for EU membership since June 2022. In any case, there are currently major concerns about a new war front in the Eastern European country.
