A 37-year-old man from Algeria has been stealing travelers’ luggage at Vienna’s main station for months. On Wednesday, the police were finally able to track down the suspected thief. He was arrested in a hotel room in the 15th precinct.
Just an hour after the Viennese public prosecutor’s office issued the permanent cadre warrant, the Algerian was arrested by the executive in a hotel room. The officers had been looking for the suspected serial thief for months.
“A brief moment of inattention is enough”
He is said to have struck Vienna’s Central Station a total of fourteen times since September last year. “The damage amounts to a five-figure sum,” police said on Thursday. But how could the crook not be caught for so long? “For professional thieves, just a short moment of inattention is enough,” explains police spokesman Mattias Schuster.
During his transport to a prison, the arrested person tried to resist state authority. Further investigations are still ongoing.
