The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warns of a worrying increase in the number of cases of sexually transmitted infections in the EU and calls for “emergency measures”.
In the 2022 reporting year, the number of reported cases increased significantly from the previous year, with cases of gonorrhea increasing by 48 percent, syphilis by 34 percent and chlamydia diseases increasing by 16 percent.
The number of cases of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) and congenital syphilis – which refers to transmission from mother to fetus – has also increased “significantly”.
Anyone potentially affected should “take proactive measures to protect themselves and their partners,” said ECDC Director Andrea Ammon. Timely testing for early detection and prompt treatment is essential, especially for people with new or multiple sexual partners.
Especially since some of these sexually transmitted infections (STDs) are also asymptomatic and can be passed on without knowledge. Knowledge about the importance of consistent condom use should also be increased.
- In 2022 there were 2059 cases Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) reported by 23 EU/EEA member states, an increase of 58 percent compared to 2021. Spain, the Netherlands, France and Belgium account for 84 percent of cases. There were also 70,881 confirmed cases of gonorrhea in 28 countries (Austria was not included, note). This is “the highest reporting rate since European surveillance of sexually transmitted infections began in 2009.”
- There have been 216,508 confirmed cases in 27 EU/EEA countries Chlamydia infection reported. They peaked in 2019, fell during the coronavirus pandemic, before recording record numbers for both women and men in 2022.
- Bee Syphilis 35,391 infections were recorded in 29 EU/EEA member states. “Reported syphilis rates were eight times higher in men than women and were highest in 25- to 34-year-old men,” the experts said, at 40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The majority (74 percent) of transmission category information was reported among men who have sex with men.
