Codenamed Martin – RAF terrorist helped elderly woman then went begging

Date:

Suddenly the search for suspected RAF terrorists in Germany has gained momentum again. More and more details are now becoming known about the man who is apparently being followed closely. During the day he allegedly helped an old woman, after which he went begging at a tourist attraction in the evening.

The sought-after Burkhard Garweg has clearly not indulged in great luxury in recent decades. As recently became known, the now 55-year-old probably last lived in a construction trailer.

Homeless people report explosive details
As Germany’s Bild reported on Wednesday evening, this is just one piece of the puzzle in the suspected terrorist’s life: he is said to have begged at the Friedrichshain Oberbaum Bridge in Berlin. Several homeless people are said to have recognized him from photos.

According to the beggars, he was last there about a week and a half ago. Although he was a very quiet person, he is said to have revealed his identity to one of the homeless people interviewed: “He said that he was once a member of the Red Army Faction,” the newspaper quoted him as saying. Another person assumes he has a cocaine problem.

Garweg apparently cared for the older woman
But it’s not just the homeless who provide clues to the man’s whereabouts. According to neighbors, Garweg is said to have taken care of an elderly woman in Friedrichshain under the code name Martin. As “Spiegel” reported, investigators believe he repeatedly visited the woman in her apartment. He went grocery shopping for the woman and even had a key to the apartment while she was briefly in the hospital.

Initially, no one in the house recognized him, only after police released mugshots, the report said. It is unclear whether he received money for this. The emergency services gained access to the apartment in question on Monday morning, but no suspicious person was found.

New momentum in the search for hidden terrorists
It was not until February 26 that Daniela Klette (65), the first suspected terrorist in hiding, was arrested in Berlin-Kreuzberg after about 30 years of searching. Together with Garweg and Ernst-Volker Wilhelm Staub (69), she belonged to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist terrorist organization Red Army Faction, which committed numerous attacks and killed people until 1991. In 1998 the RAF declared itself disbanded.

Burdock, Staub and Garweg are wanted on suspicion of involvement in terrorist attacks. They are also said to have robbed cash transporters and supermarkets in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia between 1999 and 2016 to obtain money. They are also charged with attempted murder because there was a shooting.
