An 8-year-old boy who fell into a pit about 20 feet (6 meters) deep on Sunday in a rural area of ​​Carmo do Paranaíba, a small town in Southeastern Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, died Monday after spending 18 hours. stuck in the hole and despite being removed by firefighters.

The minor, identified as Pedro Augusto Ferreira Alves, was rescued alive and given first aid at the accident site, but did not resist and died shortly after being taken to a hospital, the Minas Gerais fire brigade reported.

“When we got him out of the well, the boy was already suffering from reduced consciousness and cardiac arrest,” said rescue operation commander, Fire Lieutenant Colonel Thiago Lacerda Duarte.

“Despite the fact that we had a medical team available at the scene of the accident and an ambulance that took him to hospital, he unfortunately died,” added Duarte, who led the rescue operation several hours after an accident that caused a stir in Minas Gerais. .

According to his relatives, the boy was playing with other minors on Sunday afternoon and accidentally fell into the hole of a construction site on an old garbage dump near his home.

The fire service was immediately called and rescue work began on Sunday afternoon, when some 20 rescue workers were mobilized, but they had to overcome several difficulties to lift the boy, including fear that a landslide could bury him.

The rescue was only possible thanks to the parallel hole dug by firefighters to precisely avoid landslides in the main hole.
