Shocking moment for hundreds of passengers after takeoff from San Francisco airport: the Boeing 777 lost a wheel shortly after takeoff. The plane, which was actually supposed to fly to Japan, was able to make an emergency landing in Los Angeles moments later without any problems.
The Boeing had approximately 250 passengers on board. Shortly after takeoff, a tire came loose and the remains fell into a staff member’s parking lot. Several cars were hit by the debris, but no one was injured.
United Airlines, which experienced the accident, stressed that passenger planes are designed to land with missing or damaged tires. A Boeing 777 has six wheels under the wings on each side.
Experts suspect a maintenance problem
Experts believe this is a United Airlines maintenance issue and not a general problem with Boeing aircraft. The US Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the incident.
Boeing is currently in the spotlight after a virtually new 737-9 Max aircraft lost part of its fuselage while climbing after takeoff in early January. According to initial investigations, the American accident investigation agency NTSB believes that four mounting bolts were missing from the fragment.
However, problems with tires that are constantly exposed to extreme loads occur again and again on aircraft from various manufacturers and airlines. In January, a Boeing 757 lost a wheel shortly before takeoff from Atlanta, and in February an Airbus A319 had to land in Brazil because of a missing tire.
