Drivers on Interstate 90 in the Cleveland, Ohio, area encountered unusual oncoming traffic this weekend. As can be seen on traffic camera footage (see above), two horses suddenly came towards them on Saturday.
Traffic on Interstate 90 (I-90), the longest highway in the United States, came to a standstill until the escaped animals could be recaptured. It turned out that the horses belonged to the Mounted Division of the Cleveland Police Department. They had escaped from the authority’s stables during training.
Animals traveled as ‘ghost drivers’.
The website Cleveland.com reported that video from the Ohio Department of Transportation shows the animals on the side of the road near the unit’s stables around 12:15 a.m. Saturday. Another shot shows the animals traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the highway, slowing or stopping traffic.
Wilfredo Diaz, a sergeant with the Cleveland Police Department, told reporters that the horses belonged to the police department’s mounted division. They accidentally got lost during “routine grooming and exercise.” Mounted officers captured the two animals so that there were no further incidents, he told the AP news agency.
“Real horsepower on the I-90”
The traffic camera images provided a lot of entertainment online. Even the local transportation authority, the Ohio Department of Transportation, couldn’t resist a sarcastic comment. “Some real horsepower today on I-90 in downtown Cleveland. Were there any injuries? Neigh,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter, see post above).
