Every bloodshed is one too many: across the country, a whole network of institutions supports the fight against domestic violence, including the Chamber of Commerce.
Every woman has the right to a life free from violence. The past few days have shown that this is still not a given. Five women murdered in one day are the sad culmination of a tragic outcome in a still young year, 2024. Support and assistance are essential in the fight against domestic violence, which all too often culminates in a dramatic act of blood. And not just in acute cases. Prevention work plays an important role in this.
Provide shelter to those affected
“For the women murdered by men, all help comes too late. This makes the well-developed network of institutions and initiatives in Lower Austria that provide assistance in emergency situations all the more important. Girls’ advice centres, women’s shelters and the violence protection center provide anonymous, uncomplicated and fast support, sometimes around the clock. We cannot prevent every act of violence, but we must do everything we can to protect victims,” said ÖVP regional councilor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister.
To help those affected escape the cycle of violence, support has been increased for years, for example in the field of the economy. For the past year and a half, the state, together with the Chamber of Commerce, has been offering accessible information to victims of domestic violence.
“Together we are once again making information posters available to our companies, which can be ordered from us easily and free of charge via an online form if necessary,” explains Chamber Chairman Wolfgang Ecker. A proven instrument in the fight against violence.
Women’s dormitory has been providing shelter for twenty years
Today, International Women’s Day, marks the 113th time that attention has been drawn to equality and women’s rights. For 20 years, the women’s hostel Emmaus community St. Pölten has provided shelter in the form of shelters and a wide range of support services for homeless women.
“In recent years, women have increasingly been affected by homelessness. “Most of them come from difficult and very violent situations of dependency,” said Rita Olah, manager of a women’s dormitory.
