Pro-Palestinian activists damaged a painting by former politician Arthur James Balfour, who was involved in the creation of the state of Israel, in the British university city of Cambridge.
The group Palestine Action has released a video showing an image being sprayed with red paint and cut into pieces (see below).
Cambridge police said they received a report on Friday afternoon that a painting at Trinity College had been damaged. Officials are on scene to secure evidence and continue the investigation. There are currently no arrests.
“Imbecile act of deliberate vandalism”
Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden wrote to X that he was shocked by this “moronic act of deliberate vandalism”. The perpetrators must feel the full force of the law.
Facts about Arthur James Balfour
During the First World War, Balfour (1848-1930), as British Foreign Secretary, assured in a letter to the British Zionist Lionel Walter Rothschild that he would support the plan for a national home for Jews in Palestine.
The declaration paved the way for the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. However, the establishment of the state was also followed by a war with its Arab neighbors and the flight and expulsion of approximately 700,000 Palestinians. On the Palestinian side, the letter is therefore seen as a historical mistake.
