Large amounts of fresh snow and stormy winds dramatically increase the risk of avalanches in the Tyrolean mountains. In some cases, warning level four of the five-part scale applies.
“Forecasted higher amounts of fresh snow combined with gale-force winds will increase the risk of avalanches in parts of Tyrol at higher altitudes above the tree line on Sunday,” the state said. As of noon, the avalanche warning service has issued level 4 of the five-part scale, or high danger, in some areas.
Up to half a meter of fresh snow
The high avalanche danger applies to the areas of the Gurgler Group, the central Stubai Alps and the central East Tyrol in the south (Deferegger Alps, Schober Group, Lienzer Dolomites). 40 to 50 centimeters of fresh snow can accumulate there.
Also be careful with level 3
At the same time, other parts of Tyrol were already at avalanche danger level 3 as of Sunday morning, which means a significant risk, the experts warned. Most avalanche accidents tend to occur at this warning level. Level 3 is “often underestimated”, State Security Council member Astrid Mair (ÖVP) called for caution.
