Germany’s ruling traffic light coalition is in danger of collapsing as a result of the dispute over the supply of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. The leading Green member of the Bundestag, Anton Hofreiter, has not ruled out agreeing to a proposal from the opposition union regarding the Taurus delivery. “I haven’t made a decision yet,” the former Green faction leader told the news portal “The Pioneer” on Sunday. FDP politicians had also previously made similar comments.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz is against the supply of cruise missiles. The Union of opposition leader Friedrich Merz wants to submit another application on Thursday calling on the federal government to “immediately” transfer the weapon system to Ukraine. The FDP defense politician Agnes Strack-Zimmermann had already supported a similar motion two weeks ago. According to the “Rheinischer Post”, FDP Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki wants to make his vote dependent on the wording of the application.
FDP Secretary General Bijan Djir-Sarai warned against shortening the discussion. It is about war in Europe, it is about very complex issues that should not be discussed in small, party-political terms in the German Bundestag, he emphasized on Sunday evening in the ZDF program ‘Berlin Direkt’. At the same time, he assured: “There are no changing majorities in the German Bundestag. (…) If there were changing majorities, a coalition would be obsolete, so the question does not arise.”
