A 20-meter sperm whale has stranded off the Gulf coast of Florida. The rescue operation was canceled after numerous attempts. The animal cannot be helped.
As the responsible police of the popular tourist resort of Venice announced on Facebook on Sunday, the animal is still alive, but cannot be saved.
Attempts to tranquilize the whale from a boat were considered too dangerous.
It was last located about 150 feet from the beach. Police video shows the whale repeatedly raising its fin in the shallow water.
Mote Marine Laboratory and members of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are on scene.
