India has tested a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the researchers of the Ministry of Defense Development Agency (DRDO) for the successful test on platform X (formerly Twitter). So it concerns an ‘Agni-V’ missile, developed in India.
According to the Indian news channel NDTV, this type of missile has the so-called MIRV technology (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle). This means it can be equipped with multiple warheads that can be aimed at different targets.
It was the first successful test of a missile using this technology, the report said. Besides India, only a few countries have such missiles, including the US, China, Russia, Britain and France.
India wants to give up nuclear weapons
The missile series “Agni” (“Fire” in the local language Hindi) is one of India’s most modern missile systems and features medium and long-range missiles. The South Asian country has been advancing its missile program for more than 30 years, but has declared it will abandon the first use of nuclear weapons. The program therefore serves purely defensive purposes and to deter rivals in the region, Pakistan and China.
