Trade union proposal – Bundestag votes again on the delivery of Taurus

Date:

The Union wants the German Bundestag to vote again next week on the delivery of the Taurus cruise missile to Ukraine. The accompanying motion was drafted in November and calls on the government to “finally and immediately comply with the Ukrainian request to the greatest extent possible (…).

Just two weeks ago, the CDU/CSU failed with a similar motion in the Bundestag. Of the traffic light coalition, only the chair of the defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP), voted in favor. However, this time it could be different, as Deputy FDP Chairman Wolfgang Kubicki has also announced that he now wants to vote in favor of the motion. “Last time, at least a dozen other colleagues I know would have happily agreed to the Union’s proposal, but they submitted to the coalition’s discipline. I was close too,” he said.

Scholz: “I am the Chancellor, and that is why this applies.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has so far rejected the delivery of the Taurus missiles, which have a range of 500 kilometers, because he fears that his country could be drawn into the war. “I am the chancellor and therefore this applies (see video above).”

According to a recent survey by the YouGov polling institute, Scholz has the majority of the population behind him on this issue. 58 percent of the 2,169 eligible voters were in favor, especially voters from the Greens, and fewer from the Union and the FDP.

Vote Thursday
The Union wants to put the motion on the agenda on Thursday morning. On Wednesday, Scholz will answer questions from MPs in parliament for the first time this year, and Stier will probably also play a central role. “Parliament must take the reins of the action,” said parliamentary group leader Thorsten Frei (CDU).
