Prime Minister angry – US Secret Service: Netanyahu’s fall possible

Date:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is deeply angered by a US intelligence report suggesting his overthrow is imminent, a media report has found.

The day before, the US intelligence community’s report entitled ‘Annual Threat Assessment’ highlighted the decline in Netanyahu’s approval ratings among the Israeli public. This started before Israel’s war against the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip. “Distrust in Netanyahu’s ability to govern has deepened and spread among the public (…), and we expect massive protests demanding his resignation and new elections. Another, more moderate government is a possibility,” the report said.

“Israel is not a protectorate of the US”
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office sent a strong statement from an unnamed top government official to Israeli media on Tuesday. “Israel is not a protectorate of the United States, but an independent and democratic country whose citizens are the ones who choose the government,” the report said. “We expect our friends to take down the terrorist regime of Hamas, and not the elected government in Israel.”

Biden’s open criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza
The US is Israel’s most important ally. They support the Jewish state with large amounts of weapons and ammunition. Ahead of the presidential elections in November, US President Joe Biden is under pressure from Arab and younger voters who are more likely to sympathize with the Palestinians. Biden had recently criticized Netanyahu more openly for the immense number of civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip and for preventing sufficient humanitarian aid for the suffering civilian population.
