At least one person was killed in a violent explosion east of the Chinese capital Beijing on Wednesday. More than twenty other people were injured. The accident happened in a restaurant.

The accident happened during the morning rush hour at a restaurant in Yanjiao town, which belongs to Sanhe city, the local government announced on Wednesday morning (local time). The fire brigade said it had sent more than 150 rescuers to the accident scene, where several shops were located.

Flying parts and thick columns of smoke
Videos circulating on social media show an explosion in a building. The force of the explosion and flying debris caused serious damage to surrounding buildings and cars. A thick column of smoke rose over the city, which is about 30 kilometers from Beijing. Firefighters extinguished the flames in the building, as seen in other videos.

The Sanhe city government said a gas leak may have caused the explosion. Explosions continue to occur in China, sometimes fatally, and are often the result of violations of safety regulations.
